The Origin - by
Ma Liang Gie (馬亮耶)
Many thousand years ago in the early growth of civilization, many tribes travel across the vast lands and even across the sea to seek for a good living, a better life or merely to survive from natural disaster or wars among tribes.
Many tribes from Southern China and Formosa fled from lands they once called home and ended in new land, and from then on they call home.
Some still value their roots of origin by preserving ancient believe and culture, but many melt down into a multicultural societies and blend in with their new land and started to adopt new believes, started a new culture and even new civilization.
Many tribes then becomes Champa, Ayuthaya, Sriwijaya and many great kingdoms in South East Asia. People in Sumatra were originated from Yunnan Province of China while people in Kalimantan and Celebes were originated from Formosa. In the past Sriwijaya, a kingdom located in Sumatra, was once known as the Central of Budhism Teaching.
Here in InfoKarawaci, I will place some information of what's left from the the beauty of original ancient culture and civilization and information of how you might still enjoy the beauty.

Prenatal Yoga - by
A. S. Gunadarma
To some cultures motherhood is the essence of being a woman, and thus pregnancy is a very important event in a woman's life. Because of these, women all over the world want the best condition for themselves and their baby when they are with child. Prenatal yoga is one way of making this hope come true. Yoga can be quite helpful in preparing a women for the rigors of childbirth as well as introducing her to a gathering of other expectant mothers. It is a good way of staying in shape and diminishing the risks of problems during pregnancy.
Many women who engage in yoga on during their pregnancy find the activity to be quite an effective way of being fit. Like any form of exercise, it is essential however to prepare oneself for yoga especially when it is done as a prenatal activity. It would be best to enlist in a class that is specifically designed for pregnant women so that the instructors would be knowledgeable about prenatal safety precautions during sessions. It is recommended to begin practicing prenatal yoga early, but those pregnant women who only have time to do it during the later trimesters can still benefit a lot from the exercises.
Women who have been practicing yoga long before their pregnancy can of course continue the exercise. But because the body is bound to change during the term, it might not be possible to do certain yoga poses like before. It is imperative to tell the instructor of the pregnancy so he or she may be able to modify the exercises to fit the pregnant woman.
Safety During Prenatal Yoga
Prenatal yoga is greatly beneficial for pregnant women but extra precautions are expected since pregnancy can be a sensitive situation. Here are some tips to ensure safety in prenatal yoga:
- If you join a normal (non specific for prenatal) yoga class, be sure to tell the instructor that you are with child and which trimester you are already in.
- You should avoid poses that keep you on your back after the first trimester because such can limit the supply of blood to the uterus.
- Avoid yoga poses that might make you overstretch your muscles, especially the abdominals. During pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin is secreted to help expand the uterus, however this also softens connective tissues, increasing the risk of muscle pulling and other injuries.
- You should start doing standing poses with chair support when you hit your second trimester, because this time it would be difficult to maintain balance due to the shifting of your gravity center. You can also position your heel against the wall for support.
- Stay away from hot yoga (Bikram yoga). Heat can be hazardous for the fetus, and not to mention, extremely uncomfortable for pregnant women.
- Monitor your body well. If you feel anything uncomfortable or painful, stop immediately. Your body is changing and you would need to adjust accordingly. As the instructor about modifications of the poses.
- You should keep your pelvis in neutral position all the time. Your buttocks should be relaxed to avoid pain on your hind legs and to prevent injury to your connective tissues in the pelvis.
- If you are required to twist your body, use your back and shoulders instead of your wait to prevent extra pressure on the abdominal muscles. Twist only as far as comfortably possible. Deep twists can subject your body to hazardous strain.
There are certain poses that are deemed to be safe for prenatal yoga, among them are the cobra (done face-down during the first trimester), the triangle pose (with chair support the seated-forward bend, the Butterfly stretch, the side-angle pose, the standing-forward bend and the cat-cow. It would be wise to avoid the camel, upward bow, handstands, backbends, headstands, and one-legged balancing (without support from a chair or the wall). Of course, each person reacts differently to different moves and it is thus important to act according to one's personal characteristics.
Prenatal yoga can greatly be an advantageous for you and your future baby. If you execute exercises properly and do the necessary precautionary measures, you can maintain fitness during your pregnancy.
Introduction to Hatha Yoga - by
A. S. Gunadarma
Yoga has it beginnings in ancient India but this discipline has invaded the whole world due to the benefits it offers to people who take up yoga. A survey shows that there are more than sixteen million people who practice yoga in the United States alone.
There are various types of yoga and each type has its own methods and purposes. One type of yoga is the Hatha Yoga which literally means sun and moon, coming from two Sanskrit words Ha which means sun and Tha which means moon.
Hatha Yoga, which was first introduced in the 15th century by Yogi Swatmarama, was meant to help yoga practitioners start off with purifying their bodies before proceeding to a higher level of meditation. It is said that Hatha Yoga is similar to Raja Yoga which follows the principle of yama which refers to moral self discipline or control. However, there are sectors who believe that Hatha Yoga has its origins as early as the 10th century.
American yoga followers usually practice the Hatha Yoga to improve their physical and mental health. Most of the Western practitioners of the Hatha Yoga focus on the asanas or yoga poses and exercises but it is really a unified yoga discipline veering not only on the physical but also in Pranayama which consists of breathing and meditation techniques.
Both Hatha Yoga and Raja Yogi are known as Ashtanga Yoga because it follows the eight limbs which include the asana or the poses including the Lotus pose, easy pose, pelvic pose and easy pose. Some sectors however do not consider Hatha Yoga as Ashtanga Yoga since they believe it follows the six limbs.
The literal meaning of Hatha Yoga refers to the use of opposite forces or energies much like the sun and moon or the more familiar concept of yin and yang. This yoga discipline aims to achieve a balance between the physical and the mental powers of a person to achieve a higher level of existence. The body and mind is prepared for a higher level through the execution of the asanas.
Hatha Yoga makes use of Yama or moral control, the Asanas or the poses, Pranayama, Niyama, specific exercises known as Mudra which aims to improve the breathing technique and Nadanusandhana. All the six limbs work together to help the practitioner achieve a higher level of Kundalini or concentration and meditation.
Most Yoga practitioners strive to follow moral discipline or yama to live a virtuous life. According to the yoga discipline, a person can live a virtuous life by following the ten moral restraints primarily the ahimsa or veering away from causing harm to all living creations.
The other yamas include Satya or the ability to stick to the truth, Asteya which prohibits a person from stealing or incurring debt, Brachmacharya which requires celibacy for singles and faithfulness for those who are married, Kshma which refers to the virtue of patience, Dhriti or the principle of commitment, Daya which prohibits cruelty to all beings, Arjava or the promotion of honesty, Mitahara or keeping a moderate food intake and Shaucha or purity in thoughts and words.
Yoga has been referred to as physical yoga because of the use of poses or exercises to achieve unity in body and mind. Some people equate yoga with Hinduism maybe because it started in ancient India but it should not really be identified or attached to any religion because it is a universal science that aims to achieve spiritual balance.
Hatha yoga is a very significant discipline that helps a yoga practitioner to achieve unity of body and mind in order for him to be elevated to spiritual perfection. While different yoga pose can also develop muscles and body form, they are however primarily aimed to achieve a balance in the body systems and internal organs.
Some people take up Hatha yoga to heal their physical and emotional illnesses. With constant execution of the asanas, the human body ultimately develops into a stable and enduring vessel for the human spirit.
Yoga disciples continue to execute the asanas not only to gain physical but also mental balance. The discipline one can gain from yoga will go a long way in helping the person lead a disciplined, happy and peaceful life.
The Basics of Kundalini Yoga - by
A. S. Gunadarma
Simple aerobics exercise can tone the body but why just tone the physical aspect when a person can take up yoga and sharpen both body and mind as well? Kundalini Yoga focuses on the achievement of mental and physical perfection for its disciples and bets of all, it is free.
While most yoga disciplines focus on preparing the body for higher meditation, Kundalini Yoga focuses more on achieving the Kundalini energy which is important if a person wants to achieve spiritual perfection.
Kundalini can be best described using the theories of kinetic and potential energy. Kundalini, which literally means coiled up or better known as the snake position, seeks to explore the dormant life energies or forces in the body. Followers of Kundalini Yoga believe that the dormant energies can be awakened with the proper discipline such as the discipline of Kundalini Yoga.
Like the other Yoga types, Kundalini Yoga puts emphasis on the asana as well as chant and meditation to achieve the goal of releasing the hidden and dormant energies lying in the body. While people would look at the poses as mere stretching, it holds a deeper meaning for yoga followers.
Like the other Yoga types, Kundalini Yoga puts emphasis on the asana as well as chant and meditation to achieve the goal of releasing the hidden and dormant energies lying in the body. While people would look at the poses as mere stretching, it holds a deeper meaning for yoga followers.
While the poses and breathing techniques used by practitioners of Kundalini Yoga are aimed at healing and empowering different body parts specifically the spine, these should not be treated as medical treatments. On the other hand, a person who wants to start practicing Kundalini Yoga should first consult his doctor if the exercises are appropriate for him considering his physical condition or health.
Kundalini Yoga focuses on the awakening of the chakras or centers of energy that are located in different parts of the body from the spine to the head. There are seven centers of energy located in these body parts but there is an eight chakra which is more popularly known as aura.
Practitioners of Kundalini Yoga believe that the aura can be awakened through the asana and the breathing techniques. A person can become physically and mentally healthy and strong if he knows how to awaken this aura and source his energies from that aura.
Practicing Kundalini Yoga is expected to release the hidden energies and potentialities of a person. A person can be more mentally and physically present and alert just by releasing and awakening the hidden energies deep inside the chakras.
A person who follows the Kundalini discipline can develop his conscious and subconscious self and then unify them to achieve the union of the divine leading to a higher level of existence.
Some people may think that Kundalini Yoga is available only to specific groups of people. However, just about anyone who wants to awaken his inner strength can follow the Kundalini Yoga discipline. A person who wants to minimize the effects of stress in his life or who wants to attain a higher level of meditation or self knowledge can take on Kundalini Yoga.
Unlike other stress relievers which are not only expensive but requires a person to get out of the house, Kundalini Yoga can be practiced for free and even in the confines of the home. No need to spend money on anything but a person who wants to practice Kundalini Yoga should invest time and effort in getting to know the many poses and disciplines of Kundalini Yoga.
Kundalini Yoga has been used to treat people with emotional disorders particularly those suffering from OC or obsessive-compulsive behavior. It has been proven to relax the muscles and relieving bodily and emotional tension.
A person who practices Kundalini Yoga can expect to be more at peace with himself and with his surroundings. He can expect to have an increased energy level and an increase coping mechanism against mental and physical stress.
By bringing out the energies trapped within the body and mind, the Kundalini Yoga disciple will be able to achieve an inner peace and a higher level of existence never before experienced in his life. He will be able to gain more control of his life and of his thoughts.
Anyone who wants to gain spiritual independence should go try Kundalini Yoga and benefit from the physical and emotional maturity that can be gained from this discipline.
Bikram Yoga Tips - by
A. S. Gunadarma
Yoga is a good exercise for most people especially those who want to achieve a good mental and physical well-being. The discipline offered by yoga no matter what type it is will surely help a person become fit and confident about his physique.
Those who practice yoga believe that a person has to unite body and soul to be able to achieve a higher level of being. Only by uniting his physical with his mental can a person elevate himself to that state where everything is within his control.
The different yoga poses have their own individual purpose but all of these are aimed at enabling the person practicing yoga to relax and to become flexible and comfortable with his body. A person who is able to find that perfect balance between body and mind will not only be physically fit and healthy but also happy and mentally fit.
Despite the misconception that yoga belongs to the underworld practice of what is mystical, it is really in effect a science that tries to find the connection between the body and the mind in order to achieve physical and mental fitness for its disciples.
Yoga can be beneficial to a person in terms of lessening his pulse rate and blood pressure and in increasing the efficiency of his cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal and other bodily and organic functions. If you have not noticed it yet, try to observe people who do yoga and you would be impressed with their body posture.
It also helps to empower a harried person into living a life that is less stressful and helps him improve his mood and his attitude towards life, people and events. A person who does yoga will have more ability to accept his actualities in life.
One type of yoga that has caught the interest of some people is Bikram yoga or what they refer to as hot yoga. Bikram yoga is literally a hot yoga because the poses are performed or executed in a room that has been well-heated. Doing the poses in a heated room relieves the disciple or the follower from the various toxins that has invaded his body by releasing sweat all throughout the session.
The hot yoga style is being promoted by an Indian yoga master named Bikram Choudhury. Choudhury has recently attempted to copyright his Bikram yoga poses and this has led him to become embroiled in a legal battle that has been solved in his favor.
Choudhury claims to have the legal right to the 26 poses used in Bikram yoga and he is posing a heavy legal battle to have the exclusive right to call the practice of hot yoga Bikram yoga. If his legal action becomes successful, Bikram yoga will only be practiced and taught only by his disciples who will follow his method and prescribed yoga environment to the letter.
If his claim goes well, he would be like the franchise owner of the Bikram method and no one would be able to teach Bikram yoga without his two cents worth. This attempt to make Bikram yoga exclusive for him and his disciples has made Bikram a controversial figure in the world of yoga today.
A person who wants to give Bikram or hot yoga a try should arm himself with a durable man slip-proof mat because the high temperature required by Bikram in his hot yoga will be more than enough to keep the yoga follower sweating profusely for the whole session.
It is also very important that a woman who intends to practice Bikram yoga should make sure she is not pregnant to avoid possible negative effects to her health and the health of the unborn baby. Always drink plenty of water before doing the poses, during exercise and even after to avoid dehydration. Also avoid eating at least two hours before the actual yoga exercise.
To be sure, it is best to get the opinion of a doctor before doing the Bikram yoga to avoid health problems and complications later on. To make sure the doctor understands the extent of the risk being taken by a person doing the different yoga pose, he can bring a photo of the poses and show this to the medical expert.
The Basics of Ashtanga Yoga - by
A. S. Gunadarma
The word yoga has become synonymous with stretching exercises and the image of a person deep in thought while posing with both legs kept together in a cross position and the eyes close. This might be true up to some points but this is not the whole truth of yoga. In fact, there are a variety of yoga styles that are not known to most people.
One of many yoga styles is known as Ashtanga Vinyasa, a style that has a characteristic of aerobic actions. This style was originally targeted to be taught to teenagers particularly boys, but nowadays Ashtanga Yoga is quite popular among enthusiasts of all sex and ages.
The word Ashtanga literally means eight for ashta and limbs for anga. True to its original meaning of eight limbs, Ashtanga Yoga follows the eight limbs identified with the discipline called yoga. The eight limbs poses can be found in the Yoga Sutras as detailed by Patanjili.
Sri Pattabhi Jois, a famous Indian yogi, taught Ashtanga Yoga to his students but this type of yoga was started by Sri Krishnamacharya whose book known as Yoga Makaranda became the basis for the asana poses or sequences in Ashtanga Yoga. Krishnamacharya is a major influence in the development of yoga because he was considered the great teacher of many yoga teachers.
While he has been a major influence in the various types of yoga being taught today, it is still the Ashtanga Yoga that is considered the closest to the teachings originally espoused by Krishnamacharya.
Unknown to many people who are not well versed on the goings on of Yoga, the various types of Yoga is intended for specific reasons. This was the thrust of Krishnamacharya who made sure that the yoga he was teaching specifically conformed or responded to the needs of the students or the disciples.
This is especially true for Ashtanga Yoga which was established by Krishnamacharya for young boys who used to live in the grounds of the place owned by the Maharaja of Mysore. Since Ashtanga Yoga is targeted for very young boys in the prime of their youth, it is understandable that this yoga type is very demanding physically and mentally.
Ashtanga Yoga may still sound strange to those who do not know much about yoga but to make it more concrete, Ashtanga Yoga is the type of yoga being practiced by Madonna. The well known singer Sting is also following the discipline of Ashtanga Yoga. Ashtangi Yoga is more popularly known in the Western World as Power Yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga helps the disciple or follower live a healthy and full life through the enhancement of the eight limbs. This yoga type essentially aims to rid the follower of the everyday stress he is faced with. By following the Ashtanga Yoga discipline, a person is expected to be more relaxed despite living a stressful life.
The eight limbs of Ashtana Yoga consist of the following:
- Niyama which aims to take control of the life of a person and introduces the following virtues to the follower-personal restraint, patience, purity, and love of god.
- Yama allows the disciple to focus on the goodness of man by looking at the following truthfulness and non-violence and keeping off from the worldly pleasures through celibacy.
- Pranayama which refers to breathe control
- Dharana which helps the disciple focus on his life and the overall goal of his life
- Pratyahara which helps the follower isolate himself from the everyday noise and disorder and helps him to focus on what is positive
- Dhyana which aims to help the disciple focus on his goals and how to achieve these goals
- Samadhi which focuses on accomplishing bliss and overall peace
- Asana which is basically the posture taken to relax the body and mind of the disciple
While Ashtanga Yoga is guaranteed to get a person to stretch himself physically and mentally, this yoga type does not really impose immediate success or achievement to the user. Rather, Ashtanga Yoga is meant to be practiced slowly and gradually until the student achieves his target.
Like many other types of yoga, Ashtanga Yoga requires a lot of discipline from its students. However, all the hard work and the discipline is well worth the effort when we consider about what a student can achieve once one has maximized the benefits of Ashtanga to one's life.
Who Needs Yoga - by
A. S. Gunadarma
Do You Really Need Yoga?
Madonna does it. So does Sting and Ashley Judd. What began as a meditative practice in the East became a fitness trend around the world. While yoga has been practiced for hundreds of years, it captured the West's attention in the 1960s. When interest waned in the succeeding decades, it got a boost again from major celebrities. Pretty soon, it became one of the most popular ways of attaining physical and mental fitness.
Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word which means 'union' and its concept refers to discipline. For most practitioners of yoga, its practice promotes the union of the body, mind and spirit. For most Buddhists, Hindus and Jains, yoga is one of the methods of attaining release from karma and rebirth.
What we commonly know as yoga, that is, the series of physical poses is referred to using asana, another Sanskrit word. Although asana is just one of the many types of yoga, it has become synonymous to what many recognize as yoga.
What are yoga's benefits?
When people think of yoga, stretching exercises automatically come to mind. Although the practice does include stretching, it is only a means to create and achieve balance in the body by developing the practitioner's flexibility and strength.
Yoga poses look deceptively easy and effortless, but they are in fact designed to challenge the body's limits and each pose has a physical benefit that is specific and targeted to a certain body part and function. Yoga poses are also created in succession and the effort of doing so creates heat in the body and trains the muscles.
Since poses are also required to be held for several seconds or even minutes, physical stamina is increased. More importantly, yoga also involves a lot of breathing and specific breathing patterns are required for certain poses. The succession of yoga poses will induce sweat, allowing the body to release harmful toxins.
Who needs it?
Yoga is basically for everyone and even children can practice it, as long as there is adult supervision involved. Yoga is beneficial to anyone who is concerned about the proper way of breathing, increasing strength and flexibility and developing stamina without using the rough and tough approach of more conventional methods of physical exercise such as aerobics and bodybuilding.
People who want to develop inner calm and peace can also benefit from yoga, since it not only emphasizes physicality but spirituality as well. It is also a discipline that can accommodate anyone since different styles offer varied degrees of ease and difficulty.
Which yoga type is for you
Yoga is a general term to refer to at least 8 types of practice, each one slightly different from the other. Probably the yoga practice that can be considered as a more general way of doing physical yoga is Hatha, which can include many of the yoga disciplines that require physical practice. This type of yoga is gentle and the pace is slow, which makes it a good choice for beginners.
Vinyasa is another yoga style that can also be used to describe other types of yoga classes. This style incorporates synchronized breathing into the physical practice and the series of poses are done more vigorously. Stretching exercises can be quite intense.
Bikram
Commonly known as 'hot' yoga, this type is practiced in a room with elevated temperatures, typically ranging from 95 to 100 degrees. This yoga is great for people who want to relax tense muscles and enjoy profuse sweating, which is encouraged in Bikram yoga to promote cleansing.
Ashtanga
If you're fit and limber enough, you might enjoy the intensity and fast pacing of Ashtanga yoga. Unlike most forms, this type requires almost constant movements, with practitioners 'flowing' from one pose to the next. Poses are performed in a set series and in the same order every time.
Kundalini
Kundalini yoga is a discipline that emphasizes the 'serpent power' that is located at the base of the spine and lies dormant until the practitioner elevates it up the body to achieve liberation. This serpent power is a form of energy and Kundalini exercises help free this energy through synchronized breathing and physical exercise. Kundalini yoga involves fast and repetitive movements and chanting may be used.
Iyengar
This style of yoga emphasizes alignment of the body and is a good choice for people who want to improve their balance and overall posture. Poses in Iyengar yoga are held over long periods and may require straps and blocks to achieve maximum body alignment.
Jivamukti
Founded by David Life and Sharon Gannon, Jivamukti is inspired by Astanga yoga and involves physical exercises interspersed with meditation, chanting and spiritual instructions. If you want yoga that involves not only your body and spirit but also your mind, this is a good style to practice.
If you want more challenge and are quite fit to perform, try Sivananda. Founded in1957 by a disciple of Swami Sivananda, this type of yoga focuses on 12 poses, proper breathing, relaxation, a vegetarian diet and meditation. This is more intensive and not for the those looking for a temporary fix since this discipline will require some form of lifestyle change.
